2. AUDIENCE SEGMENTS

Segment 1: The 'Consistency Seeker' Professional

This professional knows what to do to get in shape but constantly struggles with sticking to a plan. They've experienced yo-yo dieting, binge eating, and a cycle of motivation followed by quitting. They are tired of losing progress and feel frustrated by their inability to maintain consistency on their own, even with 'accountability buddies.' They need an external push and a structured system to break this cycle.

  • Primary pain: Inability to maintain consistent habits, feeling stuck in a cycle of starting and quitting, emotional eating that derails progress, lack of accountability after initial motivation wears off.
  • Primary desire: Sustainable, long-term consistency in exercise and nutrition, a clear path to break the cycle of past failures, external accountability that genuinely works, and tangible results from their efforts.
  • Primary objection: The belief that they *should* be able to do it themselves, or skepticism that any program can truly help them overcome their long-standing issues with consistency and motivation. They might also view coaching as an expense they 'should be able to avoid.'
  • Language pattern: I ‘know’ what to do, it’s staying consistent in actually doing it that I struggle with
  • Language pattern: I’ve gained 10lbs because while I work out and try to track calories, I also indulge or binge eat which ruins any progress
  • Language pattern: I’m sick of going in this cycle so while I know I can do this myself, I am at a point where I need that extra push and accountability
  • Language pattern: I have been yo-yoing back-and-forth between being on track with exercise and nutrition and being off the rails. It typically starts with a binge eating session, followed by a bit of shame, and a reduction in motivation.
  • Language pattern: I paid for a trainer primarily to hold me accountable

Copy implication

Open with empathy for their frustrating cycle of starting and stopping. Acknowledge their knowledge but highlight that motivation alone isn't enough. Position the coaching as the missing piece for *unwavering consistency* and the only way to finally break free from the yo-yoing. Emphasize the long-term, sustainable results and the relief of having a proven system and a coach 'in their corner' (Source 31, 24). The biggest trigger is the promise of finally achieving sustainable adherence.

Segment 2: The 'Busy & Bespoke' Professional

This individual is a busy professional (30-45) whose demanding work and personal life make traditional, rigid fitness programs impossible. They value their time and need a highly flexible, convenient, and customized program that can adapt to travel, limited home equipment, and variable schedules. They want effective results without sacrificing their already packed life, and they dislike generic, 'cookie-cutter' plans.

  • Primary pain: Lack of time due to work and family, difficulty fitting workouts into a variable schedule, travel disrupting routines, feeling tied to a gym or specific location, receiving generic programs that don't fit their unique constraints or available equipment.
  • Primary desire: A truly personalized workout and nutrition plan that adapts to their specific lifestyle, equipment, and schedule; the flexibility to train anywhere, anytime; convenience without sacrificing effectiveness; and a coach who is 'super accommodating' to their needs.
  • Primary objection: Concerns about online coaching being 'cookie-cutter' or not genuinely personalized, potential technical glitches with an app, or a coach who doesn't pay attention to details like available equipment or preferred workout days. They may also question if virtual coaching can offer the same quality as in-person for complex exercises.
  • Language pattern: He's been super accommodating with adjusting workouts for when I am travelling (Using the hotel fitness center or me packing resistance bands)
  • Language pattern: I am not a 'Gym Membership' person (not for lack of trying) and prefer working out at home
  • Language pattern: I travel too much for in-person training to be sustainable.
  • Language pattern: She constructed a workout plan that was highly detailed, and a nutrition plan that has been both flexible and realistic.
  • Language pattern: Many days would go by with me sitting at a desk, or in a car, or on the phone at home.

Copy implication

Highlight flexibility, customization, and convenience. Open with the promise of a fitness program that *finally* fits their demanding life, not the other way around. Emphasize the coach's ability to adapt workouts for travel, home setups, and busy schedules. Use phrases like 'custom workout plans designed just for you' (Source 32) and 'flexible and realistic' (Source 33). The biggest trigger is the promise of 'no more excuses' (Source 31) because the program adapts to *them*.

Segment 3: The 'Burned by Bots & Scams' Professional

This segment is highly skeptical of online fitness solutions due to past negative experiences with unresponsive coaches, generic programs misrepresented as personalized, or predatory billing practices (e.g., unauthorized renewals, difficulty canceling). They distrust 'bot-like' interactions and vague promises, demanding transparency, qualified expertise, and genuine value for their money.

  • Primary pain: Unresponsive or 'bot-like' coaches, generic 'copy & paste' programs, unauthorized charges or difficulty canceling subscriptions, feeling scammed or exploited, lack of real personalization despite promises, trainers appearing unqualified.
  • Primary desire: A highly responsive, human coach; genuine, individualized program design; transparent pricing and billing with no hidden fees or cancellation traps; clear communication and expert guidance; and confidence that they are getting real value for their investment.
  • Primary objection: High cost without proven value, fear of being scammed again, belief that online coaching is inherently generic or ineffective, distrust of qualifications, and concerns about 'subscription fatigue' or hidden fees.
  • Language pattern: A lot of bad coaching feels like going to a used car salesman and being sold a lemon
  • Language pattern: cookie cutter program im never going back to them
  • Language pattern: My coach did not pay attention to details which required me to repeat myself
  • Language pattern: There was no added value to having a personal virtual trainer.
  • Language pattern: They do programs and pretend it's custom.
  • Language pattern: Noom is a scam and has stolen my money
  • Language pattern: The 'coach' is an unhelpful bot that responds once a day max and abandons you entirely after awhile
  • Language pattern: Auto renewal Scam! Unauthorized subscription and worst customer service!
  • Language pattern: this company will continue to steal your money after you terminate the subscription.

Copy implication

Address their skepticism directly and build trust. Differentiate clearly from 'scam' companies and 'bot-like' services. Emphasize the *human* element of your coaching, your qualifications, and commitment to individualized attention. Highlight transparent pricing, clear cancellation policies, and a strong results guarantee (Source 34). Use specific language to counter their negative experiences, e.g., 'no hidden fees,' 'real human interaction,' 'personalized, not templated.' Focus on testimonials that speak to trust, responsiveness, and genuine support.

3. MARKET AWARENESS LEVEL

Assessment: Product Aware (Level 4)

  • I switched from Trainwell to Future. Although I think the Future app is a bit sleeker looking, it is very similar. It integrates well with the apple watch, and I use it similarly to what you’ve described… My trainer messages me almost everyday I have a workout planned. There is always communication. I use the app for accountability.
  • I’ve used apps to try to set up workout routines, and I’ve worked with in-person trainers tied to a specific gym. Neither was feasible or effective for me in the long term. I don’t have the discipline or know-how to make real progress on my own just tracking workouts, and I travel too much for in-person training to be sustainable. Caliber solves for both.
  • Noom vs WW. For those who have experienced both Noom and weight watchers, what are your pros and cons of each? Noom is working well for me, over 20 pounds in 4 months… Before it's time to renew in a couple months I'm trying to figure out if I'd be better off switching to WW for the sake of continued support after reaching my goal weight.
  • I personally don't understand the point in paying for an online coach when more than enough information is available free online.
  • I’m currently doing a block of online training (lofting and nutrition) and I'd swear by it. It keeps me accountable and on track for progression, costs a fraction of the cost of 1:1 sessions and allows me to train as flexibly as I want.

Solutions they know about:

  • App-based online coaching (Future, Caliber, Trainwell) (Known and actively compared, but with significant issues around personalization and coach quality.)
  • Weight loss apps (Noom, Weight Watchers, LoseIt) (Widely known and used, but heavily criticized for restrictive diets, poor coaching, and billing scams.)
  • Traditional in-person personal trainers (Known as effective for accountability and form, but often seen as too expensive or inconvenient for busy lifestyles.)
  • Free online information/apps (Known as an alternative, but often lacking in accountability and personalization.)
  • Other app-based training platforms (Trainerize, BetterMe, Freeletics, TrueCoach, Everfit, PT Distinction, QuickCoach) (Known and used by trainers, but clients experience issues with clunky UI, bugs, and generic programming.)

What they are largely unaware of:

  • What truly effective, personalized, and transparent online coaching looks like without the common pitfalls of 'cookie-cutter' programs, unresponsive coaches, or hidden billing practices.
  • That a program can offer high accountability and customization at a price point below traditional in-person training but above generic apps, addressing both time and budget constraints effectively.

What this means for copy

The audience is Product Aware (Level 4). They know about online coaching and specific apps like Noom, Future, and Caliber, and many have already tried them or considered them. Do NOT start by explaining the problem of losing weight or the general benefits of online coaching. Instead, lead with their frustration with existing solutions. Acknowledge their past failures and skepticism directly. For example, open with: 'You've tried online coaches and apps, but still feel like you're guessing what works. Tired of cookie-cutter plans and ghosting coaches?' This approach addresses the 7 of 67 sources (10%) that cite lack of personalization and the 7 of 67 sources (10%) that mention past failures with consistency as key pain points, allowing you to position your program as the superior alternative.

4. MARKET SOPHISTICATION LEVEL

Assessment: Stage 4 heading into Stage 5

The market is flooded with online coaching apps and weight loss programs making similar claims. Customers have experienced these claims fall short, leading to deep skepticism. Many users have tried multiple services and are actively comparing them, often detailing specific failures in personalization, coach responsiveness, and billing practices. They are moving beyond generic claims to scrutinize the *mechanism* of how these services are delivered, showing a trend towards total skepticism if new solutions don't clearly differentiate.

What competitors are claiming:

  • “Personalized coaching, customized diet plan, mindset shift, 'psych tips,' calorie deficit focus, allows 'enjoying all favorite foods.'” (Noom — $17 - $70/month (annual vs. monthly))
  • “Elite personal fitness coach, weekly custom workout plans, daily accountability via text/check-ins, flexible schedule.” (Future — $149 - $199/month)
  • “One-on-one personal training, customized program (goals, experience, lifestyle), daily motivation & expert guidance, video form reviews, weekly progress reviews, fast response times, guaranteed results (20% body comp in 12 weeks or refund).” (Caliber — Starts at $200/month)
  • “Zero-point food system, continued support for goal maintenance.” (Weight Watchers (WW) — Varies (not specified in quotes, but implied as a subscription))
  • “Personalized workouts, coaching, easy to use apps.” (BetterMe, Freeletics, Trainerize — Varies, but often with hidden fees or auto-renewal scams.)

Messaging gaps — what NO competitor is talking about:

  • Truly Personalized and Responsive Coaching. Competitors claim personalization, but many users experience generic, 'cookie-cutter' programs and unresponsive, bot-like coaches. This leads to a lack of results and high frustration. The market needs proof of *real* human engagement and adaptable, individualized plans. 'Lack of personalization / Generic Programs' is found in 7 of 67 sources (10%) with medium to high emotional intensity.
  • Transparent and Ethical Billing/Pricing. A widespread and highly emotional pain point is hidden fees, difficult cancellation processes, and unauthorized auto-renewals. Companies like Noom, BetterMe, and Freeletics are frequently accused of being 'scams' due to these practices. No major competitor is leading with explicit transparency around pricing, renewals, and easy cancellation. 'Billing Issues / Unauthorized Charges / Difficulty Canceling Subscriptions' is found in 4 of 67 sources (6%) with extreme emotional intensity.
  • Sustainable and Healthy Approach to Nutrition. Many programs, like Noom, are criticized for restrictive calorie targets (e.g., 1200 calories) and daily weigh-ins that create unhealthy relationships with food and the scale, leading to unsustainability and relapse. The market needs an approach that focuses on long-term habit change without deprivation or psychological damage. 'Unrealistic Calorie Targets / Restrictive Dieting' is found in 1 of 67 sources (1%) with high emotional intensity, but the underlying sentiment of unsustainability is broader.

What this means for copy

Every competitor says 'personalized plans,' 'accountability,' and 'expert guidance.' These claims are overused and no longer trusted at face value due to widespread negative experiences with bot-like coaches, generic programs, and deceptive billing. The copywriter should position your program by highlighting the *failure* of these common claims and offering a *new mechanism* or a radically *better version* of the old one. The biggest gap to position in is **TRANSPARENT, TRULY PERSONALIZED, AND RESPONSIVE COACHING with ETHICAL BILLING**. Draft angle: 'Tired of apps that promise a 'personal coach' but deliver a bot, a generic plan, and surprise charges? Get a real human coach who *knows* you, *adapts* to your life, and charges one simple price: $197/month, no hidden fees, cancel anytime.' This directly counters the 'Lack of Personalization' (7 of 67 sources) and 'Billing Issues' (4 of 67 sources, extreme intensity) that are causing widespread market skepticism.

5. PAIN POINTS

Ranked by frequency

#1 Coaches are unhelpful, unqualified, or ghost clients

Found in 7 of 67 sources (10%) — across Reddit, Trustpilot, Forum, News Release, Tech News, and Blog/Review Site, often relating to coach-client interactions. This pain point has extreme emotional intensity.

Opinion of online coaching marketplace: I think if I were to consider it, it would have to relate to my goals and come from someone who clearly knows what he or she is talking about regarding those goals. I would look for a coach who reviews some or all of my training by video, who only collects supplemental data (HRV, resting HR, body weight, whatever else) if he or she can tell me why it's relevant. My mindset is that a coach is there to make me the strongest/fastest/best I can be, and that doesn't involve keeping me bamboozled by extra bullshit. A good coach will be able to explain why I'm doing what I'm doing when asked and will be open about when he or she is experimenting to see what's effective for me. A lot of bad coaching feels like going to a used car salesman and being sold a lemon.

Reddit

Did you ask for a different coach? I just started and I'm regretting getting a coach. She tells me absolutley nothing unless I ask. I had to ask her to put chest workouts in she forgot, and when i asked her to lengthen my workouts she added one I just did for 1 day and didn't lengthen for any future dates. :( super disappointed

Reddit

My coach did not pay attention to details which required me to repeat myself and keep correcting him… He gave me workouts on days I specifically told him I can't do workouts on. He included equipment in the workouts that I don't have after I sent him a video of the equipment I do have… there was no added value to having a personal virtual trainer… No accountability whatsoever.

Trustpilot

Then got pregnant with twins and gained all and then some of my weight back and tried to join again in 2024 and everything had changed. Including the personal goal coach feature (which was why I was largely successful in the first place). I went ahead and unsubscribed because the new model just wasn't doing it for me.

Reddit

My other complaints with Noom: -The “coach” is an unhelpful bot that responds once a day max and abandons you entirely after awhile… Overall, absolutely not worth the price.

Reddit

My personal trainer ghosted me… My former personal trainer took my money and ghosted my ass… He randomly canceled so much and I started to not care or confront him because I’m afraid of provoking him… But he still has at least $300-400 of sessions from me… how the fuck can I get my money back in a way that won’t make this person hate me.

Reddit

#2 Past failures and a cycle of quitting due to lack of consistency and motivation

Found in 7 of 67 sources (10%) — across Reddit, Blog/Review Site, Research/Academic, Blog, Industry Report, and Trustpilot. This pain point has high emotional intensity.

I have been yo-yoing back-and-forth between being on track with exercise and nutrition and being off the rails. It typically starts with a binge eating session, followed by a bit of shame, and a reduction in motivation. I have found it really hard to get back on track.

Reddit

I ‘know’ what to do, it’s staying consistent in actually doing it that I struggle with. I haven’t had success with accountability buddies and am thinking the coaching route may be what I’m looking for.

Reddit

I’m seriously considering getting an online fitness coach who can do weekly check ins with me, give me a workout and meal plan with macros. I’ve been consistently working out 5-6 times a week for years now and I don’t have much to show for it. I’ve gained 10lbs because while I work out and try to track calories, I also indulge or binge eat which ruins any progress. I’m sick of going in this cycle so while I know I can do this myself, I am at a point where I need that extra push and accountability.

Reddit

Have I woken up every morning since starting Future absolutely dying to workout? I’m only human, and the answer is no. Some days you’re stressed, have too much work, feel tired, or don’t feel your best. Chilling on the couch is a whole lot more appealing.

Blog

Before enrolling with Caliber, my personal and work environment had lead to significant stress and loss of sufficient time to exercise like I used to. Many days would go by with me sitting at a desk, or in a car, or on the phone at home. Stress eating was taking hold. And my blood tests were coming back pre-diabetic with significant weight gain and loss of fitness.

Trustpilot

#3 Generic programs that don't fit unique needs or body

Found in 7 of 67 sources (10%) — across Reddit, Trustpilot, Forum, News Release, Tech News, and Blog/Review Site. This pain point has high emotional intensity.

i like more credentials with a lifter. People like greg nuckols, or garret blevins, ben rice. Also the second i see its a cookie cutter program im never going back to them.

Reddit

I did some online training, years ago. I hired him for a food and training plan. I had friends who used him who were into figure comps; I wanted to cut to be happily in my weight class but am definitely not interested in cutting to figure. I told him this in no uncertain terms. He had me on 1200 calories, rice cakes, tilapia, and no squat/bench/deadlift (only machines). Complete waste of money. Make sure your coach coaches what you want coached, and that he knows what you want coached. I got a couple of PDFs from his figure clients, I am assuming at this point, and a couple of phone calls.

Reddit

I switched from Trainwell to Future. I tried three trainers with Trainwell and none worked for me (two didn't seem to listen/personalize my workout and the third didn't communicate enough). But my Future trainer is perfect for me. But yeah, the price difference is painful.

Reddit

A literal joke of a company. They exploit their employees ferociously. ... Clients - don't sign up! They do programs and pretend it's custom. ... No coach can actually connect with 100 clients and write a personalized program. That's why the "management" pushes coaches to use as many templates as they can.

Trustpilot

If you’re paying some exceptionally low fee, you’ll probablies just be getting a Copy & Paste plan, and will get the odd text at the weekend.

Reddit

By the way, application is way too overrated, moves are classic that you can find in many "actually free" applications, videos etc. The so-called arrangement of daily programme by professionals is not so convincing… it expects you to resume by the very same program a month ago altough it knows that you haven’t been training for a month. Besides, the warm up is very demotivating, sometimes harder that the program itself.

Trustpilot

#4 Feeling ripped off by high costs or poor value

Found in 6 of 67 sources (9%) — across Reddit, Trustpilot, YouTube, Forum, and Blog. This pain point has high emotional intensity.

I did some online training, years ago. I hired him for a food and training plan. ... Complete waste of money.

Reddit

It’s very expensive for the medication for that amount of money meal plans shouldve been included. After having been on it all of the sudden the medication bottles were half the size of what I started with for the same price. I barely got 3 doses from them and it’s supposed to be a month!

Trustpilot

Cool idea and app. ... Here are the issues I had: ... it is nice to hear motivational recordings like "let's do this!" or "way to finish the day strong!", and my coach is a nice person, but that is hardly worth $150. There was no added value to having a personal virtual trainer.

Trustpilot

Love your energy! I can tell you really love this app. $150 is too much for me but the $19 seems like a great way to get a plan and test it out.

YouTube

I spoke to someone today for an hour who laid out his program that would involve helping me plan workouts, helping me create a meal plan and track my food and do weekly zoom check ins. It’s $2000 for the year. I’m just not sure if it’s worth it.

Reddit

Caliber’s top tier—and the one I tried—is Premium, which consists of one-on-one personal training. Pricing for Caliber Premium starts at $200 per month, and each package is customized based on your needs. It is expensive, yes, and of course not everyone can afford to pay $200 per month for a workout plan. However, you’re getting so much more than just a fitness program, as individualized personal training entails a qualified professional who is dedicated to helping you reach your specific fitness goals.

#5 Feeling cheated by hidden charges and difficult cancellations

Found in 4 of 67 sources (6%) — across Reddit, Trustpilot, Blog, and Forum. This pain point has extreme emotional intensity.

They steal your money and fail to deliver their product on time ( or even, at this point)... When I contacted customer service, they said they have no idea why my order is delayed but they will contact the pharmacy team and get back to me. That was 5 days ago and I still have no idea when, or if I, will receive their product… I then asked for a refund as they failed to follow through with their shipment of 3-7 days but customer service said they don’t provide refunds, which is ridiculous… Please don’t use NOOM, there are better companies.

Trustpilot

I got a 8months free promo email and decided that was the perfect time to subscribe again. The coupon code only discounts it 25% I enter chat only to be met with an AI… Human gives me generic stuff then says “You can create the subscription first, and then we can apply the promo code. However, to apply the code, you need to have an active subscription.” Well that doesn’t make any sense… I sign up for the subscription, tell them. It still shows 25% not 65% percent off and all they say is “I can see the promo code was applied successfully “ this goes back and forth and finally I get this wall of text… BEFORE I COULD EVEN FINISH READING I WAS DISCONNECTED FOR GOING AFK… Right after I hit “confirm,” I’m bombarded with no less that 4 different add ons to pay for… Trying to cancel, I’m given 3 different options to stay for a cheaper price, none of which actually add up to the “discount” they tell me it is… It was the definition of toilet paper math.

Reddit

Noom is a scam and has stolen my money… I was recently notified of a $200 dollar charge from Noom, after the charge was made. I received no notification in advance of a yearly charge… I requested a refund immediately… The refund was denied, as Noom claims the charge cannot be reversed… They apparently felt it was acceptable to offer me a "free year for a friend" in exchange for my money.

Reddit

I cancelled my subscription a year ago and Noom just charged me a non-refundable “renewal fee” despite my cancellation. Instead of admitting they made a mistake, they are trying to sell me another subscription. Just be aware that this company will continue to steal your money after you terminate the subscription.

Reddit

There are complaints as far back as 5 years ago about the subscription renewal practices for Freeletics. You are lured in with a discount, but then auto-renewal is done without any warning and money is taken from your account… I suspect most of their revenue is for ‘non-refundable’ accidental renewals. I think this practice is unethical - the whole thing feels like a scam. Auto renewal Scam! Unauthorized subscription and worst customer service!… I have been charged for auto renewal silently. They do not remind you via email or any other means. I haven't used the app and still I am charged with £94.99!… even if you cancel subscription, they will keep taking your money without your will!

Trustpilot

UpbeatLifeguard3570 • It really seams to me a scam service. On the Feb 12 I signed for their program and for at first showed a amount of 19.95$ but with their HIDDEN FEES I was charged over 75$. It is really disappointing! I asked for a refund and of course they denied saying that the reason to get refund was not under their refund policy… I call it b***, when you simply trick people and not let them aware of the extra fees.

Reddit

#6 Lack of actual results or ineffective programs

Found in 3 of 67 sources (4%) — across Reddit, Trustpilot, and Forum. This pain point has high emotional intensity.

I did some online training, years ago. I hired him for a food and training plan. ... Complete waste of money.

Reddit

I tried it for several months, and it didn't work for me… The “coach” that you are assigned is key… I had a really unresponsive coach, canned responses, and it felt like talking to a bot. I ended up cancelling and going back to just tracking with LoseIt.

Reddit

Started noom about 3 weeks ago after... Eventually I gave up after 6 months as the database just didn't work as well as I needed it too.

Reddit

I’m curious to hear the community’s thoughts on whether having a training and/or nutritional coach is worth the (hefty) investment… Having someone else figure out my training and macros has made things less stressful for me, but my body has gone in the opposite direction of the results I wanted, and sometimes I’m not sure the trainer’s protocols are the best for me.

Reddit

I’ve gained 10lbs because while I work out and try to track calories, I also indulge or binge eat which ruins any progress. I’m sick of going in this cycle so while I know I can do this myself, I am at a point where I need that extra push and accountability.

Reddit

#7 Overwhelmed by daily tracking requirements and constant weighing

Not directly mapped to a frequency table theme, but found across 3 sources (YouTube, Reddit). This pain point has high emotional intensity.

I mean, $5 a day to stay in shape really isn't that much. I spend more than that on takeout and if I'm seeing results, I'd probably eat less and better.

YouTube

I like noom but I don't like the fact you have to weight everyday

YouTube

My biggest issue with Noom was that it created an unhealthy relationship with the scale - weighing in every day can be so psychologically damaging, I am shocked it’s as popular program as it is. I also did not like their calorie allocations.

Reddit

#8 Unrealistic and restrictive diet plans leading to hunger and unsustainability

Found in 1 of 67 sources (1%) — across Reddit and YouTube. This pain point has extreme emotional intensity.

How is it that I keep seeing people say that they get to enjoy all of their favorite foods and stay within their calorie budget? I can barely get through a mostly green and yellow breakfast, lunch, and dinner and stay under 1200 calories… I feel like this is not sustainable… It's too restrictive and I'm thinking about canceling.

Reddit

Mine is 1200 as well and I always go over budget so it's completely unrealistic for me. ive actually got a high enough metabolism I was just eating really unhealthily, so I don't worry too much about going over budget by a couple hundred, the tracking alone helps me reduce my calories and I'll probably start losing weight.

Reddit

2 weeks in I am only 1 pound down instead of 4 because the calorie budget is WRONG… On Noom, I have the same 1300 budget, and am then given back half of any calories above that I burn… that’s straight up not enough of a deficit… If I’m paying $20/month partly for an app to do that math for me, it should be correct.

Reddit

Yes, it’s 1200, I get 1400 if I walk/run 5 miles- when I say it it sounds like I’m being a baby truly but like let’s say I have a grilled chicken wrap and carrots and hummus it’s so many calories! By the time dinner rolls around I have only so many and that makes it hard. I’d have to go run another 5 miles to get 200 more calories 🥴

Reddit

I didn’t like it Bc for me it was a 1200 calorie diet with some psycho babble… I felt deprived on 1200 calories and started eating junk and not the zero foods I lost so much weight on.

Reddit

#9 Apps are clunky, buggy, and not user-friendly

Found in 3 of 67 sources (4%) — across Reddit, Trustpilot, and YouTube. This pain point has medium emotional intensity.

The app itself still has a lot of technical glitches like workout with no instructional videos.

Trustpilot

So over the past 5 months, i have jumped around from Trainerize - PTDistinction - CoachRX and i don't understand the hype. They’re charging an arm & leg for a very mediocre and clunky product. The only cool thing about Trainerize is the video library, but everything else is so over-engineered and accessibility is not seamless. It took me a good 2 hours to fully setup my home page and migrate some clients and fully understand what the platform can do, and it was just a headache the whole way through.

Reddit

I'm a new coach and have been using trainerize. Am I missing something or is this app actually a pile of shit? It's so clunky. And there's a ridiculous amount of bugs. For example, I cannot use the progression spreadsheet editor. The free text field just doesn't work… If I duplicate a workout, it hangs and crashes.

Reddit

I use it entirely as an after thought. Totally unoptimized, clunky, terrible UI, clients don't like to engage in it, and also I just don't like it.

6. DESIRED OUTCOMES

Ranked by frequency

#1 Accountability and motivation to stay on track

Found in 8 of 67 sources (12%) — across Reddit, YouTube, Blog/Review Site, Trustpilot, App Store, Blog, and News Release.

I agree with you 100%, but motivation and accountability/consistency are so important for getting and staying fit/strong. ... I paid for a trainer primarily to hold me accountable... I could have put together a program and diet like this myself, but with no one watching me and pushing me to my limits every day, I wouldn't have achieved the results I did.

Reddit

I'm currently doing a block of online training (lofting and nutrition) and I'd swear by it. It keeps me accountable and on track for progression, costs a fraction of the cost of 1:1 sessions and allows me to train as flexibly as I want.

Reddit

I use the app for accountability. For some reason having someone know I was supposed to show up this morning makes a big difference in my consistency.

Reddit

Even on weeks when I'm not even needing form checks or program changes, just having the accountability really helps my consistency.

Reddit

For me it wouldn’t be worth it. I let myself get so out of shape and the thought of exercising again made me overwhelmed. Physically going to a trainer helps with accountability. Also, he modifies any exercises if I’m not quite ready for and corrects my form. He pushes me to do more and some workouts I know I would have quit halfway through if he wasn’t there.

Reddit

Almost every morning, my coach sent me a motivational quote and encouraged me to get my workout in. I don’t normally have an issue with accountability, but it was nice to know my coach was in my corner and wanted to see me succeed. If you’re someone who struggles with sticking to a workout plan, the Future app is a great option for you because you’ll have a real person gently nagging you to get going.

I would look for a coach who reviews some or all of my training by video, who only collects supplemental data (HRV, resting HR, body weight, whatever else) if he or she can tell me why it's relevant.

Reddit

In person is best, but a good trainer will definitely be able to still help you out virtually, just speaking from my experiences as a personal trainer. I have trained clients both virtually and in person. General form stuff I can definitely adjust virtually but if there's something complex going on or more advanced exercises I do prefer in person… As a beginner I think it's very likely you can receive helpful adjustments and training virtually.

Reddit

I think it's worth it! Similar to you, I didn't need motivation to train but I was really concerned about my form and was struggling to improve. #1 Self-guided fitness / Working out alone

7 of 67 sources (10%) — across Reddit, Blog/Review Site, Research/Academic, Blog, Industry Report, Trustpilot

I agree with you 100%, but motivation and accountability/consistency are so important for getting and staying fit/strong. I've been going to the gym regularly for over 10 years. I have done all sorts of routines and fad workouts. I started to get stale with my regimen. I had the knowledge and experience to revamp my routine and break my plateaus...I was just lacking motivation. I paid for a trainer primarily to hold me accountable... I could have put together a program and diet like this myself, but with no one watching me and pushing me to my limits every day, I wouldn't have achieved the results I did.

Reddit

I’ve used apps to try to set up workout routines, and I’ve worked with in-person trainers tied to a specific gym. Neither was feasible or effective for me in the long term. I don’t have the discipline or know-how to make real progress on my own just tracking workouts, and I travel too much for in-person training to be sustainable. Caliber solves for both.

Trustpilot

I have been yo-yoing back-and-forth between being on track with exercise and nutrition and being off the rails. It typically starts with a binge eating session, followed by a bit of shame, and a reduction in motivation. I have found it really hard to get back on track.

Reddit

I ‘know’ what to do, it’s staying consistent in actually doing it that I struggle with. I haven’t had success with accountability buddies and am thinking the coaching route may be what I’m looking for.

Reddit

Failure mode: People struggle with staying consistent and motivated on their own. They often fall into a cycle of starting and stopping, or working out without seeing real progress due to a lack of accountability and proper guidance.

#2 Generic online coaching apps (e.g., Noom, Future, Caliber when poorly executed)

7 of 67 sources (10%) — across Reddit, Trustpilot, Forum, News Release, Tech News, Blog/Review Site

i like more credentials with a lifter. People like greg nuckols, or garret blevins, ben rice. Also the second i see its a cookie cutter program im never going back to them.

Reddit

I switched from Trainwell to Future. I tried three trainers with Trainwell and none worked for me (two didn't seem to listen/personalize my workout and the third didn't communicate enough). But my Future trainer is perfect for me. But yeah, the price difference is painful.

Reddit

My coach did not pay attention to details which required me to repeat myself and keep correcting him… He gave me workouts on days I specifically told him I can't do workouts on. He included equipment in the workouts that I don't have after I sent him a video of the equipment I do have. 2. it is nice to hear motivational recordings… but that is hardly worth $150. There was no added value to having a personal virtual trainer.

Trustpilot

My other complaints with Noom: -The “coach” is an unhelpful bot that responds once a day max and abandons you entirely after awhile… -the psych tips are nothing special. I have learned all of them just by being on this sub… Overall, absolutely not worth the price. I spent the same for a year of Premium LoseIt than one month Noom.

Reddit

Failure mode: These apps often provide cookie-cutter workout or meal plans that don't fit individual needs or preferences. Coaches might be unresponsive, give generic replies, or seem like bots, leading to a lack of genuine personalization and support.

#3 Fitness apps with confusing billing and cancellation practices (e.g., Noom, Freeletics, BetterMe)

4 of 67 sources (5%) — across Reddit, Trustpilot, Blog, Forum

They steal your money and fail to deliver their product on time ( or even, at this point)… I then asked for a refund as they failed to follow through with their shipment of 3-7 days but customer service said they don’t provide refunds, which is ridiculous… Please don’t use NOOM, there are better companies.

Trustpilot

Noom is a scam and has stolen my money… I was recently notified of a $200 dollar charge from Noom, after the charge was made. I received no notification in advance of a yearly charge… The refund was denied, as Noom claims the charge cannot be reversed… They apparently felt it was acceptable to offer me a "free year for a friend" in exchange for my money.

Reddit

I cancelled my subscription a year ago and Noom just charged me a non-refundable “renewal fee” despite my cancellation. Instead of admitting they made a mistake, they are trying to sell me another subscription. Just be aware that this company will continue to steal your money after you terminate the subscription.

Reddit

Pricing is not super clear on every screen. You see one number, then the pay period is in small text… Automatic renewal is on by default. If you forget to cancel before the term ends, it renews… I bought a 3 month plan via the website, forgot to turn off auto renew. It charged the next term. I contacted support within 24 hours. They refused a full refund, offered partial credit if I kept the sub… Friend who paid via Apple got a refund through Apple directly, not through BetterMe.

Forum

Failure mode: Users often experience hidden fees, unexpected auto-renewals without warning, difficulty canceling subscriptions, and refusal of refunds, leading to frustration and feeling scammed.

#4 Fitness apps with technical problems or poor usability (e.g., Trainerize, CoachRx)

3 of 67 sources (4%) — across Reddit, Trustpilot, YouTube

Reddit

Totally unoptimized, clunky, terrible UI, clients don't like to engage in it, and also I just don't like it.

Reddit

Failure mode: Many fitness apps are clunky, buggy, or have terrible user interfaces, making them frustrating for both trainers and clients to use effectively. This leads to disengagement and hinders progress.

#5 Unrealistic / Restrictive Diet Apps (e.g., Noom, Weight Watchers)

1 of 67 sources (1%) — across Reddit

Reddit

I didn’t like it Bc for me it was a 1200 calorie diet with some psycho babble… I felt deprived on 1200 calories and started eating junk and not the zero foods I lost so much weight on.

Reddit

Failure mode: Some diet programs set calorie targets too low (e.g., 1200 calories), making users feel deprived and hungry. This approach is not sustainable long-term and can lead to frustration, binging, and an unhealthy relationship with food.

#6 Unprofessional in-person personal trainers

2 of 67 sources (2%) — across Reddit, Trustpilot

He would show me what kind of exercise to do really quickly, and instead of watching me diligently like I paid him for, he would go on his phone, take a bathroom break, and do his own workouts… At the old gym, he would legit stare at me and have his phone in his locker for the entire hour… I would have rather paid $80 for that than a clearance version of training.

Reddit

Failure mode: Some in-person trainers are disengaged during sessions, focus on their own activities, or even ghost clients after taking payment. This leads to a waste of money and a lack of effective coaching or progress.

#6 There's enough free information online, so paid coaching isn't needed.

3 of 67 sources (4%) — across Reddit

I personally don't understand the point in paying for an online coach when more than enough information is available free online.

Reddit

There is nothing about this service that is unique. There are 100 other free apps/services that do the same thing. They understand this and tout a monthly charge, but then when you sign up for a trial say "you have to switch to the monthly charge option during the free trial". That is not clear. Then when requested to refund the difference, as I was willing to try it for the full month they refused even to go that step. There is a whole option when you try and cancel that is "I didn't realize i would be paying in one lump sum" which proves this is a common issue their users have.

Reddit

This is why I'm canceling Noom after I accidentally canceled my $19/month subscription. How can you justify yourself as being such a 'unique weight loss app' when all I do is weigh in and count calories? Hell no, I'm going to Weight Watchers.

Yes. Absolutely worth it. I've been spending hundreds of dollars on my gym membership over the years without a lot of success. In other words, throwing money and time down the drain. I'm looking this as an investment that's making going to the gym worthwhile for achieving my goals.

Address this fear head-on with clear pricing and strong guarantees. Highlight transparent billing and an easy cancellation process. Lead with: 'No hidden fees. No sneaky auto-renewals. Just clear pricing and a results guarantee you can trust.'

Objection

Online programs don't work or aren't as good as in-person training.

In the customer's words

For me it wouldn’t be worth it. I let myself get so out of shape and the thought of exercising again made me overwhelmed. Physically going to a trainer helps with accountability. Also, he modifies any exercises if I’m not quite ready for and corrects my form. He pushes me to do more and some workouts I know I would have quit halfway through if he wasn’t there.

Counter evidence type: customer story

Supporting evidence

I'm currently doing a block of online training (lofting and nutrition) and I'd swear by it. It keeps me accountable and on track for progression, costs a fraction of the cost of 1:1 sessions and allows me to train as flexibly as I want.

r/Fitness — tylorbear in “Has anyone ever done "online coaching?”

I think it's worth it! Similar to you, I didn't need motivation to train but I was really concerned about my form and was struggling to improve. I started Katie Sonier's program TWK which is virtual coaching and it's helped me a ton! I record myself doing certain movements and send it to the coaches who give me feedback on my form. I've made a lot of improvement since then.

r/xxfitness — janetsnakehole-- in “Is virtual personal trading worth it for a beginner…?”

Caliber Reviews — ‘An app-based service that actually delivers’

Draft response angle

Show that online coaching provides unique advantages over in-person training, especially for busy individuals. Highlight video form checks, constant accountability, and results-driven programs. Lead with: 'Don't let outdated ideas hold you back. Our online coaching delivers real results, often better than the gym, on YOUR terms.'

Objection

There's enough free information online, so paid coaching isn't needed.

In the customer's words

I personally don't understand the point in paying for an online coach when more than enough information is available free online.

Counter evidence type: customer story

Supporting evidence

I agree with you 100%, but motivation and accountability/consistency are so important for getting and staying fit/strong. I've been going to the gym regularly for over 10 years. I have done all sorts of routines and fad workouts. I started to get stale with my regimen. I had the knowledge and experience to revamp my routine and break my plateaus...I was just lacking motivation. I paid for a trainer primarily to hold me accountable... I could have put together a program and diet like this myself, but with no one watching me and pushing me to my limits every day, I wouldn't have achieved the results I did.

r/Fitness — [deleted] in “Has anyone ever done "online coaching?”

I ‘know’ what to do, it’s staying consistent in actually doing it that I struggle with. I haven’t had success with accountability buddies and am thinking the coaching route may be what I’m looking for.

r/loseit — OP, “Online coach experience?”

This is one of the most incredible benefits of Future versus doing it alone. When you have to make excuses to another person instead of just yourself about why you can’t work out, you realize how lame they usually are. It gets embarrassing.

Future app review — accountability section

Draft response angle

Acknowledge the wealth of free information, but emphasize the missing ingredients: accountability, personalized guidance, and the motivation to *consistently apply* that information for real results. Lead with: 'You know *what* to do. We help you *actually do it* and stick with it.'

Reddit

Your excuses are no longer safe when using the Future app. Don’t have any equipment? No problem. Traveling across the country? Sounds good. Only have time at 4 a.m? Even better. This digital personal training app won’t let you convince yourself that you don’t have the time, equipment, or motivation to crush your fitness goals.

Having a second set of eyes on training, nutrition, physique progression, etc. is invaluable. We often avoid the things we dislike or are bad at when self coached and taking that next step to hire someone to help out will push you over the edge in getting to your goal.

Reddit

As an over 40 yo busy mom and wife, I've lost weight in the past but I was having trouble sustaining it based on my current exercise regimen and food program. I knew there was more to finding my right calorie count and macros, but I wasn't sure where to begin. I also wanted the help of a trainer to find the best exercises to meet my goals without the extra expense or having to be tied to a gym.

Reddit

Before enrolling with Caliber, my personal and work environment had lead to significant stress and loss of sufficient time to exercise like I used to. Many days would go by with me sitting at a desk, or in a car, or on the phone at home. Stress eating was taking hold. #6 Realizing What a Good Coach Offers After Bad Experiences

2 of 67 sources (3%) — across Reddit

My first few coaches sucked. They may be good coaches for other people, but at least for me, it was not a good experience. But it taught me a lot. I learned I love having a coach to direct me and my goals. I learned what to look for in a coach, what questions to ask, how to align myself with the right coach FOR ME. There are a million coaches out there and they are not all equal.

Reddit

I switched from Trainwell to Future. I tried three trainers with Trainwell and none worked for me (two didn't seem to listen/personalize my workout and the third didn't communicate enough). But my Future trainer is perfect for me. But yeah, the price difference is painful.

11. COMPETITOR LANDSCAPE

Ranked by mention frequency

#1 Noom

20 of 67 sources (29.85%) — across Reddit, Trustpilot, YouTube, Blog, Global Market Insights, Sacra, Journal of Medical Internet Research, and Healthline

Promise: The Noom Diet plan uses a unique app that helps people lose weight in a healthy and long-term way… Purchasing the Noom Diet subscription opens up a personalized coaching option as well as a fully customized diet plan.
Reality: Noom is a scam and has stolen my money… I was recently notified of a $200 dollar charge from Noom, after the charge was made. I received no notification in advance of a yearly charge… I requested a refund immediately… The refund was denied, as Noom claims the charge cannot be reversed… They apparently felt it was acceptable to offer me a "free year for a friend" in exchange for my money.

Pricing: Monthly plans vary from $17 to $70, with an annual plan costing around $209 (approximately $17.42 per month).

Unique mechanism: Psychology-based lessons, color-coded food system (green, yellow, red foods), and a 'personal goal coach' to guide users in building healthier habits.

Strengths

  • Effective for many users for initial weight loss and can help achieve significant results.
  • Focus on calorie deficit, which is a proven method for consistent weight loss.
  • Can help shift mindset and build consistency in healthy habits.

Weaknesses

  • Unrealistic calorie targets, often set too low, leading to feelings of deprivation and unsustainability.
  • Coaches are often perceived as unresponsive bots, providing generic, canned responses rather than personalized support.
  • Significant issues with billing, unauthorized charges, difficulty canceling subscriptions, and poor customer service.

#2 Future

8 of 67 sources (11.94%) — across Reddit, Trustpilot, YouTube, Garage Gym Reviews, Blog, PR Newswire, TechCrunch, and Forbes Health

Promise: With Future, you get your own elite personal fitness coach who makes weekly custom workout plans designed just for you. But what sets Future apart is daily accountability. Your coach messages you with check-ins, tips, and feedback before and after workouts. This constant communication energizes you to get workouts done and conquer fitness goals.
Reality: My coach did not pay attention to details which required me to repeat myself and keep correcting him… He gave me workouts on days I specifically told him I can't do workouts on. He included equipment in the workouts that I don't have after I sent him a video of the equipment I do have… No accountability whatsoever.

Pricing: Costs $199 per month, with the first month discounted to $99. Previously reported at $149 per month.

Unique mechanism: Virtual 1-on-1 coaching with an "elite" trainer via an app, daily communication, and custom weekly workout plans tailored for flexibility (at home, traveling, different times).

Strengths

  • Strong accountability through daily coach messages helps users maintain consistency and stick to workouts.
  • Offers high flexibility, accommodating users' travel schedules, limited equipment, or unusual workout times.
  • Motivating messages from coaches provide mental preparation and encouragement to complete workouts even on low motivation days.

Weaknesses

  • Coaches can be inattentive or provide generic programs, leading to a lack of true personalization.
  • Users perceive the high cost as not always worth the value, especially if coaching interactions are not deeply customized.
  • Allegations exist that coaches are pressured to use templates, potentially compromising program personalization.

#3 Caliber

5 of 67 sources (7.46%) — across Reddit, Trustpilot, Apple App Store, and Garage Gym Reviews

Promise: Your coach will design a training and nutrition program just for you based on your goals, experience and lifestyle. Daily Motivation & Expert Guidance. Stay on track with in-app messaging, video form reviews, and individualized guidance. Weekly Progress Reviews. Get in-depth analysis from your coach to optimize your training. Fast Response Times. Your coach is available 24/7, typically replying within a few hours. Guaranteed Results. On average, Caliber members improve their body composition by 20% or more within 12 weeks. If you don't see results, we'll refund the cost of the program.
Reality: Did you ask for a different coach? I just started and I'm regretting getting a coach. She tells me absolutley nothing unless I ask. I had to ask her to put chest workouts in she forgot, and when i asked her to lengthen my workouts she added one I just did for 1 day and didn't lengthen for any future dates. :( super disappointed

Pricing: Premium one-on-one personal training starts at $200 per month.

Unique mechanism: Focus on traditional strength training and 'mastery over variety' (consistency over trendy workouts), combined with personalized training and nutrition, video form reviews, and a results guarantee.

Strengths

  • Highly effective for consistency and achieving tangible results, including strength gains and weight loss.
  • Coaches provide expert guidance and peace of mind with tailored plans and progress monitoring.
  • Offers a flexible solution, making it feasible for busy professionals who cannot commit to in-person training.

Weaknesses

  • Inconsistent coach quality, with some coaches being unresponsive or failing to personalize workouts adequately.
  • The high cost can be a significant objection for some users, despite the perceived value and personalization.
  • The strong emphasis on traditional strength training might not appeal to users seeking variety or trendy high-intensity exercises.

#4 Weight Watchers (WW)

4 of 67 sources (5.97%) — across Reddit

Promise: I’ve done both and counting calories is MUCH better. I tried WW after doing CICO just for kicks and it drove me crazy that it pretended that certain foods were 0 calories when I KNEW they weren’t. Like an entire meal would be zero calories according to their system. I switched back pretty fast.
Reality: WW worked for me at first, when I had 90lbs to lose. But their whole 0 point food system is not designed to get you to a normal BMI. When you're down to that last 20-25lbs every calorie counts. As a lifelong binge eater, WW only taught me to binge eat better foods.

Pricing: Not specified in quotes, but generally subscription-based with various tiers.

Unique mechanism: A points-based food system where foods are assigned values, with some foods being 'zero-points' to guide healthier eating.

Strengths

  • Can be effective for initial and larger weight loss for some users.
  • Offers a sense of freedom from guilt or obsessive calorie counting for certain individuals.

Weaknesses

  • The zero-point food system can be misleading, hindering progress for the last few pounds and potentially teaching users to 'binge eat better foods'.
  • The program's approach can create an unhealthy mental relationship with food, framing certain foods as 'sins'.
  • The tracking system and weekly numbers can be annoying and psychologically damaging for some users.

#5 Trainerize

3 of 67 sources (4.48%) — across Reddit

Promise: The only cool thing about Trainerize is the video library, but everything else is so over-engineered and accessibility is not seamless.
Reality: So over the past 5 months, i have jumped around from Trainerize - PTDistinction - CoachRX and i don't understand the hype.

Pricing: Described as 'charging an arm & leg' with expensive add-ons; no specific numerical pricing provided in the quotes.

Unique mechanism: A platform specifically designed for personal trainers to manage and deliver online coaching, featuring a video exercise library for clients.

Strengths

  • Features a comprehensive video exercise library, which is a key benefit for trainers.
  • Widely considered by trainers for program delivery, communication, and habit tracking, indicating its comprehensive capabilities.

Weaknesses

  • Described as clunky, unoptimized, and not intuitive for clients, leading to poor user engagement.
  • Suffers from numerous bugs and technical issues, such as crashing or non-functional features.
  • Perceived as overpriced for a mediocre product, especially considering its many add-ons.

extremeVisceral, life-altering language

Billing Issues / Scams / Unauthorized Charges

Users employ ALL CAPS, strong negative words like 'scam,' 'stolen,' 'IMPOSSIBLE,' 'ridiculous,' and 'toilet paper math,' along with detailed rants describing fraudulent behavior.

  • They steal your money
  • Noom is a scam and has stolen my money
  • IMPOSSIBLE to cancel
  • Auto renewal Scam! Unauthorized subscription and worst customer service!
  • charged over 75$. It is really disappointing! I asked for a refund and of course they denied saying that the reason to get refund was not under their refund policy… I call it b***, when you simply trick people and not let them aware of the extra fees.
  • man what a shady company
  • toilet paper math.
highAngry, frustrated, combative

Lack of Personalization / Generic Programs / Poor Coaching Quality

Users express deep frustration, feelings of being unheard, and betrayed expectations. They use strong negative descriptions such as 'complete waste of money,' 'joke of a company,' 'unhelpful bot,' and 'pile of shit' to describe their experiences.

  • cookie cutter program im never going back to them
  • Complete waste of money
  • My coach did not pay attention to details which required me to repeat myself and keep correcting him
  • no added value to having a personal virtual trainer
  • They do programs and pretend it's custom. They spend hundreds of thousands to hire new shiny CEOs but pay their coaches around $40k/year to maintain 100 clients. You are not special - they just put up a lot of metrics to pretend to make you feel that way. No coach can actually connect with 100 clients and write a personalized program. That's why the 'management' pushes coaches to use as many templates as they can.
  • The “coach” is an unhelpful bot that responds once a day max and abandons you entirely
  • canned responses, and it felt like talking to a bot
  • If you’re paying some exceptionally low fee, you’ll probablies just be getting a Copy & Paste plan
  • BetterMe is not coaching. There is no real feedback loop.

Unrealistic Calorie Targets / Restrictive Dieting

Users report strong emotional reactions including confusion ('I don't get it'), feelings of unsustainability, and thoughts of canceling. They describe targets as 'unrealistic' and express physical discomfort like 'I'm hungry!' and psychological damage from daily weigh-ins.

  • you shouldn't be eating below 1200 calories!!!!!
  • I can barely get through a mostly green and yellow breakfast, lunch, and dinner and stay under 1200 calories… I feel like this is not sustainable… It's too restrictive and I'm thinking about canceling.
  • Mine is 1200 as well and I always go over budget so it's completely unrealistic for me
  • I’m hungry!
  • My biggest issue with Noom was that it created an unhealthy relationship with the scale - weighing in every day can be so psychologically damaging
  • I felt deprived on 1200 calories

App/Platform Technical Issues & Usability

Users frequently complain about functionality, describing products as 'clunky,' 'a pile of shit,' and having a 'terrible UI.' They detail specific bugs and poor design that hinder their experience.

  • The app itself still has a lot of technical glitches like workout with no instructional videos
  • the database just didn't work as well as I needed it too
  • mediocre and clunky product
  • Trainerize is a pile of poo
  • clunky. And there's a ridiculous amount of bugs. For example, I cannot use the progression spreadsheet editor. The free text field just doesn't work… If I duplicate a workout, it hangs and crashes.

Accountability and Motivation (Desire for/Impact of)

Users provide strong positive statements about how coaching improves consistency, breaks through plateaus, and makes fitness more enjoyable. They highlight the personal impact of having someone 'gently nagging' or making them 'feel embarrassed' about excuses.

  • motivation and accountability/consistency are so important
  • I paid for a trainer primarily to hold me accountable... I wouldn't have achieved the results I did.
  • It keeps me accountable and on track
  • just having the accountability really helps my consistency
  • It’s the most consistent I’ve ever been with training and nutrition in my entire life.
  • having someone know I was supposed to show up this morning makes a big difference in my consistency
  • getting motivating messages first thing in the morning from my coach mentally prepares me to get my workout done no matter how I feel
  • When you have to make excuses to another person instead of just yourself about why you can’t work out, you realize how lame they usually are. It gets embarrassing.

Value for Money / High Cost Objections

Users directly state high costs and question if the service is 'worth it,' often followed by justification of value or comparison to alternatives.

  • It’s very expensive for the medication
  • $150 is too much for me
  • worth the (hefty) investment
  • $2000 for the year. I’m just not sure if it’s worth it.
  • a PT without the hefty price tag
  • It is expensive, yes
  • charging an arm & leg for a very mediocre and clunky product

Skepticism/Lack of Trust in Online Coaching (Generic/Unqualified)

Users express doubt, suspicion about the quality of online trainers, and reference previous bad experiences with unqualified coaches, sometimes comparing paid services to free information.

  • I personally don't understand the point in paying for an online coach when more than enough information is available free online.
  • i like more credentials with a lifter... the second i see its a cookie cutter program im never going back to them.
  • 99% of 'online personal trainers' are Joe and Jill who watch youtube influencers and think they suddenly understand how to care for other people's physical wellbeing… Big no from me.

Reddit

I have been yo-yoing back-and-forth between being on track with exercise and nutrition and being off the rails. It typically starts with a binge eating session, followed by a bit of shame, and a reduction in motivation. I have found it really hard to get back on track.

Asking Detailed Questions about Program/Coaching

question — 5 of 67 sources (7%) — across Reddit, Trustpilot, App Store, Blog, and Blog/Review Site

I am curious what other trainers are doing with their businesses. For the trainers who use apps, are you delivering live coaching or just delivering programs using the built in exercises? Do you have one on one consultations or do you do everything via forms and chat? What are you charging for things like this? Also, which apps do you consider the best? I am looking for nutrition, program delivery and building, communication and habit tracking.

Reddit

I’m curious to hear if anyone has had any experience with Noom and whether you found it beneficial… I just think that paying for weight loss apps can be a bit futile because it’s proven most of the time that they don’t work.

Reddit

I spoke to someone today for an hour who laid out his program that would involve helping me plan workouts, helping me create a meal plan and track my food and do weekly zoom check ins. It’s $2000 for the year. I’m just not sure if it’s worth it.

Noom vs WW.

Reddit

I switched from Trainwell to Future. I tried three trainers with Trainwell and none worked for me (two didn't seem to listen/personalize my workout and the third didn't communicate enough). But my Future trainer is perfect for me. But yeah, the price difference is painful.

Reddit

Before using TrueCoach, I reached out to various other coaches and TrueCoach seemed to be the most popular, but Trainerize seemed like a distant second worth checking out. TrueCoach's staff were very responsive, Trainerize's were not at all… At no point in utilizing TrueCoach have I wondered if maybe the grass is greener somewhere else.

I started my free trial of Noom in October - right before my grandma passed away. At that time, I knew I would be an emotional mess and would not be able to actually "try" at the program. So, I quit after the free two-week trial although I had lost 12 lbs. during those two weeks.

1

I've tried and failed so many times before. Why is this program going to be any different?

Maps to: Pain Point: Past Failures with Consistency / Motivation (found in 7 of 67 sources).

herohow it worksabout the coach

Why answer this first

This is the biggest belief they need to overcome. If they don't believe this program can break their cycle of failure in the first 10 seconds, they will leave the page.

2

Is a real human being going to look at my stuff and talk to me, or is this just another app with a robot coach?

Maps to: Pain Point: Lack of Personalization / Generic Programs (found in 7 of 67 sources) and Desire: Accountability and Motivation are Key Drivers (found in 8 of 67 sources).

herohow it worksfeatures

Why answer this first

They are paying for coaching, not just an app. They need to believe a real, attentive expert is on the other side. This justifies the premium price over a $20 app.

3

Why answer this first

Price is a huge hurdle. The copy must build so much value that $197 feels like a great deal, not an expense. If the value isn't clear, the price will seem impossible.

Consistency Failure → Real Human Accountability

You already know what to do. But doing it consistently is the hard part. We're the accountability you've been missing.

Headline variations

  • Why do 73% of people quit their fitness routine? The answer isn't motivation.

  • "I know what to do, it’s staying consistent in actually doing it that I struggle with."

CTA suggestion

Get the Accountability You Need

Why this works

This is the core pain point. 'Past Failures with Consistency' was found in 7 of 67 sources (10%) and 'Accountability and Motivation' was a key desired outcome in 8 of 67 sources (12%). People don't lack information; they lack a system and a person to keep them on track. The emotional intensity is high, with words like 'shame' and 'struggle'. This angle speaks directly to that.

Supporting evidence

I’ve paid for the coaching program for about 9 months and really enjoy it. It’s the most consistent I’ve ever been with training and nutrition in my entire life. I was someone that struggled with discipline and consistency so having that coach really helps.

r/caliberstrong — SupernovaJones in “Caliber coaching program review? How is it?”

I have been yo-yoing back-and-forth between being on track with exercise and nutrition and being off the rails. It typically starts with a binge eating session, followed by a bit of shame, and a reduction in motivation. I have found it really hard to get back on track.

r/loseit — OP, “Online personal trainer worth it?”

I use the app for accountability. For some reason having someone know I was supposed to show up this morning makes a big difference in my consistency.

Headline variations

  • Your coach gave you a plan with equipment you don't have? You deserve better.

CTA suggestion

Build My Personalized Plan

Why this works

The pain of generic, 'cookie-cutter' programs is a top complaint, appearing in 7 of 67 sources (10%). Customers feel ignored and ripped off, leading to high emotional intensity. This angle directly counters the business model of large apps like Future and Noom, creating a clear point of difference.

Supporting evidence

My coach did not pay attention to details which required me to repeat myself and keep correcting him… He gave me workouts on days I specifically told him I can't do workouts on. He included equipment in the workouts that I don't have after I sent him a video of the equipment I do have.

Future.co main reviews page — June 17, 2022 review

I did some online training, years ago. I hired him for a food and training plan... He had me on 1200 calories, rice cakes, tilapia, and no squat/bench/deadlift (only machines). Complete waste of money. Make sure your coach coaches what you want coached, and that he knows what you want coached.

r/Fitness — _VIVIV_ in “Has anyone ever done "online coaching"?”

No coach can actually connect with 100 clients and write a personalized program. That's why the "management" pushes coaches to use as many templates as they can.

Competitor Bots → A Real Human Coach Who Cares

Draft headline

Tired of Talking to Fitness Bots? Get a Real Coach Who Listens to You, Answers Your Questions, and Actually Cares if You Succeed.

Headline variations

  • Your Noom 'coach' is a bot that replies once a day. Here's the alternative.

  • What's the difference between a real coach and a chatbot? Results.

Email subject line

CTA suggestion

Meet Your Real Coach

Why this works

This is a huge competitor gap. Poor customer service and lack of personalization are mentioned in 10 of 67 sources combined. The language used to describe competitor 'coaches' is full of disappointment and frustration ('unhelpful bot', 'canned responses'). Promising a real, responsive human creates an immediate, valuable contrast.

Supporting evidence

The “coach” is an unhelpful bot that responds once a day max and abandons you entirely after awhile…

r/loseit — xkatniss, “Warning- Noom’s calorie budgets are incorrect and may get you off track”

I had a really unresponsive coach, canned responses, and it felt like talking to a bot. I ended up cancelling and going back to just tracking with LoseIt.

r/loseit — comments in “Noom: is it worth it?”

My coach messages me almost everyday I have a workout planned. There is always communication.

Headline variations

  • Traveling for work? Your fitness plan comes with you.

See How It Fits Your Schedule

Why this works

This angle targets the core identity of the customer: 'busy professional'. 'Time Constraints' (5 of 67 sources) and 'Desire for Flexibility' (6 of 67 sources) are top-tier themes. This acknowledges their primary life challenge and positions the service as the solution that fits *into* their life, rather than demanding they change it.

Supporting evidence

As an over 40 yo busy mom and wife, I've lost weight in the past but I was having trouble sustaining it... I also wanted the help of a trainer to find the best exercises to meet my goals without the extra expense or having to be tied to a gym. Ultimately, I wanted to find a way to exercise from my home whenever was most convenient for me...

Caliber Reviews — ‘Great mix of science, technology and personal interaction’

Before enrolling with Caliber, my personal and work environment had lead to significant stress and loss of sufficient time to exercise like I used to. Many days would go by with me sitting at a desk, or in a car, or on the phone at home.

Caliber Reviews — ‘Phenomenal program for busy professionals and parents’

It keeps me accountable and on track for progression, costs a fraction of the cost of 1:1 sessions and allows me to train as flexibly as I want.

Shady Billing Practices → Simple, Honest Pricing

Draft headline

Our Price: $197/Month. That's It. No hidden fees. No surprise auto-renewals. You can cancel anytime.

Headline variations

  • Tired of fitness apps that are impossible to cancel? We are too.
  • We will never charge your card without telling you first. Period.
  • "Noom is a scam and has stolen my money."

Email subject line

The #1 complaint about fitness apps

CTA suggestion

Start Your First Month ($197)

Why this works

Billing issues were mentioned in 4 of 67 sources (6%), but the emotional intensity is 'extreme'. People use words like 'scam', 'steal', and 'unethical'. This creates profound distrust in the entire market. By being upfront, transparent, and simple, you build massive trust and differentiate from major competitors who are actively angering customers.

Supporting evidence

Noom is a scam and has stolen my money… I was recently notified of a $200 dollar charge from Noom, after the charge was made. I received no notification in advance of a yearly charge… I requested a refund immediately… The refund was denied

r/Noom — superstitiouspigeons, “Noom is a scam and has stolen my money”

I cancelled my subscription a year ago and Noom just charged me a non-refundable “renewal fee” despite my cancellation. Just be aware that this company will continue to steal your money after you terminate the subscription.

r/Noom — nordictri, “Noom will charge you after you cancel”

There are complaints as far back as 5 years ago about the subscription renewal practices for Freeletics. You are lured in with a discount, but then auto-renewal is done without any warning and money is taken from your account… I think this practice is unethical - the whole thing feels like a scam.

Freeletics reviews — “Unethical business practices.”

Angle 6

Desire for Sustainable Change → Stop Starting Over

Draft headline

This isn't another 30-day challenge. This is the last fitness program you'll ever need to start.

  • Get results that last longer than your subscription.
  • How to build habits that make staying in shape automatic.

Email subject line

CTA suggestion

Build My Last Fitness Plan

Why this works

The desire for long-term, sustainable results appears in 5 of 67 sources (7%). It's the antidote to the 'yo-yo' cycle of past failures. While many competitors promise quick results, focusing on sustainability speaks to a deeper, more mature desire of the 30-45 age demographic. They're tired of temporary fixes.

Supporting evidence

This was easily the most sustainable and successful diet I've tried and I feel like I could keep this going for a very, very long time

r/Fitness — u/NotSmokey, RP online coaching review

I've used apps to try to set up workout routines, and I’ve worked with in-person trainers tied to a specific gym. Neither was feasible or effective for me in the long term.

Caliber Reviews — ‘An app-based service that actually delivers’

Been on noom on and off for 2 years. The main thing that kept me on, is that the first time I stopped, all my progress was lost, and they initial survey is soooooooo long, that it was a shame to start over again.

Restrictive Diets → Eat Real Food and Still Lose Weight

Draft headline

Tired of 1200-calorie misery? Get a nutrition plan that doesn't involve tilapia, rice cakes, and feeling hungry all the time.

Headline variations

  • If your diet feels like a punishment, you're on the wrong diet.
  • How to lose weight without giving up the foods you love.
  • "I can barely get through a mostly green and yellow breakfast, lunch, and dinner and stay under 1200 calories… It's too restrictive"

Email subject line

1200 calories is not a plan

CTA suggestion

See A Sample Meal Plan

Why this works

This is a potent pain point targeting a huge competitor, Noom. 'Unrealistic Calorie Targets' was only coded in 1 of 67 sources, but numerous quotes show the high emotional intensity and unsustainability of this approach. It's a specific, visceral pain ('hungry', 'deprived', 'misery') that your service can solve.

Supporting evidence

How is it that I keep seeing people say that they get to enjoy all of their favorite foods and stay within their calorie budget? I can barely get through a mostly green and yellow breakfast, lunch, and dinner and stay under 1200 calories… I feel like this is not sustainable… It's too restrictive and I'm thinking about canceling.

r/Noom — amatthew317 in “I don't get it”

you shouldn't be eating below 1200 calories!!!!! the trick is to eat enough that you don't feel deprived, but less than usual so you'll still lose weight… upping your calories isn't cheating, it's a long-term strategy

Draft headline

Even people with experience get stuck. Get a professional coach to analyze your form, fix your program, and get you past your plateau.

Headline variations

  • Working out for years with nothing to show for it? Here's why.

  • What if you're only one small tweak away from seeing real results?

Email subject line

CTA suggestion

Get My Expert Review

Why this works

The 'Need for Professional Guidance / Objective Eye' appears in 5 of 67 sources (7%). This angle is perfect for prospects who are already working out but not seeing results. It respects their effort while offering the missing piece: expert guidance. It elevates the coach from a simple motivator to a strategic partner.

Supporting evidence

I’ve been consistently working out 5-6 times a week for years now and I don’t have much to show for it. I’ve gained 10lbs because while I work out and try to track calories, I also indulge or binge eat which ruins any progress. I’m sick of going in this cycle so while I know I can do this myself, I am at a point where I need that extra push and accountability.

r/xxfitness — OP, “Has anyone had success using an online personal trainer/fitness coach?”

Having a second set of eyes on training, nutrition, physique progression, etc. is invaluable. We often avoid the things we dislike or are bad at when self coached and taking that next step to hire someone to help out will push you over the edge in getting to your goal.

r/loseit — u/GiftedPerformance, “Online coach experience?”

I had the knowledge and experience to revamp my routine and break my plateaus...I was just lacking motivation.

r/Fitness — [deleted] in “Has anyone ever done "online coaching"?”

Angle 9

Wasted Money in the Past → An Investment, Not an Expense

Draft headline

Think of the money you've already wasted on gym memberships you didn't use and apps that didn't work. This is an investment to stop that cycle.

Headline variations

  • At $6.50 a day, this is cheaper than the takeout that's holding you back.
  • Is $197/month expensive? Not when you compare it to getting no results for free.
  • Yes, it costs more than a free app. Because it actually works.

Email subject line

An investment, not an expense.

CTA suggestion

Invest In Your Results ($197/mo)

Why this works

This is a blind-spot angle that tackles the cost objection head-on. 'High Cost' is an objection in 6 of 67 sources (9%). Instead of avoiding the price, this reframes it. It validates their past frustrations with wasted money and positions your service as the smart investment to end the cycle of failure. It turns a negative (cost) into a positive (value).

Supporting evidence

For context: I’ve been working with a coach (licensed CPT and nutrition coach) for the past ~9 months and have spent about $3k… my body has gone in the opposite direction of the results I wanted… I lost 100 pounds on my own and am tempted to just go back to doing my own thing instead of sinking more money into this.

r/xxfitness — EllJayEss, “Are training/nutritional coaches worth the money?”

Yes. Absolutely worth it. I've been spending hundreds of dollars on my gym membership over the years without a lot of success. In other words, throwing money and time down the drain. I'm looking this as an investment that's making going to the gym worthwhile for achieving my goals.

r/Fitness — u/NotSmokey, RP online coaching review

Before starting Noom, I didn’t want another expense and thought I should be able to do it on my own. Now,l that I see how much my mindset has shifted and how consistent I am, I realize that it was costing me more (my health) before I started!!

Offering an integrated solution is a powerful value proposition that simplifies their life and promises better, more coordinated results.

Supporting evidence

I’m seriously considering getting an online fitness coach who can do weekly check ins with me, give me a workout and meal plan with macros.

r/xxfitness — OP, “Has anyone had success using an online personal trainer/fitness coach?”

I spoke to someone today for an hour who laid out his program that would involve helping me plan workouts, helping me create a meal plan and track my food and do weekly zoom check ins.

r/loseit — OP, “Online personal trainer worth it?”

He's a lovely guy and great coach, he'll help with form, nutrition etc. All aspects of the journey...

21. MARKET BLIND SPOTS

What no one in this market is talking about — and how to exploit it

1

No competitor talks about how to cancel. The process is either hidden or predatory.

Evidence

Found in 4 of 67 sources (6%), the theme of 'Billing Issues / Unauthorized Charges / Difficulty Canceling Subscriptions' is filled with extreme emotion. Quotes describe companies as a 'scam' that will 'steal your money'. 0 of 67 sources describe a simple, positive cancellation experience.

Copy opportunity

Be the first to offer a 'No-Traps Guarantee'. Headline: 'Cancel anytime. In one click. We'll even remind you 3 days before your plan renews.'

2

No one has a clear plan for what happens *after* you reach your goal weight.

Evidence

The market is obsessed with 'before and after' but silent on 'after the after'. One user on Reddit (source_id: 38) explicitly asks about switching programs to get better 'continued support after reaching my goal weight.' 0 of 67 sources mention a structured maintenance program from a competitor.

Copy opportunity

Sell the 'happily ever after'. Headline: 'Losing the weight is just Phase 1. We'll then build your personalized plan to keep it off for life.'

3

Competitors promise 'accountability' but deliver bots and generic check-ins.

Evidence

Multiple users describe their 'coach' as 'an unhelpful bot' (source_id: 14) or someone who sends canned responses instead of real, personalized motivation. There is a huge gap between the promise of accountability and the customer experience.

Copy opportunity

Define what real accountability means and expose the fake version. Headline: 'Tired of Bot-Coaching? Get a real coach who actually cares if you show up. Here's what my daily accountability looks like...'

4

Everyone claims 'personalization', but nobody guarantees it.

Evidence

The pain of 'Lack of Personalization / Generic Programs' was found in 7 of 67 sources (10%). People feel they are getting 'cookie cutter' plans. No competitor puts their money where their mouth is with a guarantee against this specific pain.

Copy opportunity

Create the 'Anti-Cookie-Cutter Guarantee'. Headline: 'I guarantee your plan is built 100% for you, from scratch. If you ever receive a workout that feels like a template, that month is on me.'

5

Fitness marketing pretends motivation is constant. No one talks about the days you want to quit.

Evidence

A review of the Future app (source_id: 32) honestly states, 'Have I woken up every morning since starting Future absolutely dying to workout? I’m only human, and the answer is no.' This reality is absent from competitor marketing, which focuses on hype and motivation.

Copy opportunity

Be the honest coach who plans for failure. Headline: 'Motivation is a liar. That's why this program is built for the days you feel tired, stressed, and want to order a pizza. Here's the plan for when life gets in the way.'
